Freestanding tubs from different brands look alike in photos, but the numbers behind them aren't. A 60" tub can hold 43 gallons or 67. One weighs 90 lb and another 425 lb. Some have an end drain and one backrest, others a center drain for two. Some include the drain and overflow, and some need a $614.60 drain on top. Freestanding tubs by price tier

Under $1,700: acrylic and resin, 58" to 71"

This is where the sharpest-priced freestanding tubs sit. Everything here is acrylic or resin, light enough for two people to carry, from the compact Kube Ovale to the 71" Kube Volta.

• Maax Sax 6032 AcrylX ($1,459.50): 60" x 32" x 24 7/8", end drain, 44 US gal, 130 lb. Maax's AcrylX surface, a skirt in white, Sterling Silver, black or Thunder Grey, F² drain connector compatible, and a limited lifetime warranty. Made in North America, per Maax.
• Kube Bath Ovale 59 ($1,490.40): 58.3" x 29.5" x 22.76", 55 US gal. Kube's spec sheet lists "high molecular pure resin", levelling feet, a brass pop-up drain included and cUPC approval. A good fit for smaller bathrooms.
• Kube Bath Volta 71 ($1,650.24): 71" x 31.5" x 23.5", 70 US gal, from the same Kube resin family as the Ovale. The longest tub in this guide under $1,700.

$1,700 to $2,500: acrylic, stone and cast iron

In this tier you get 60" to 68" acrylic tubs, the Slikcast stone Kuadra, the Neptune Munich F2, and the cast iron clawfoot Harrogate.

• Zitta Celio ($1,736): 60" x 30 11/16" x 23 5/8", 67 US gal (254 L), with an integrated overflow and adjustable legs. Zitta lists acrylic, fibreglass reinforced, and a 20-year warranty that varies with the finish. Its immersion point is 15 1/8".
• Liro Aristo Opal 60 ($1,815): 60" x 32" x 23", center drain. Liro's Aristo spec sheet lists pure acrylic construction reinforced by fibreglass and adjustable legs. It also comes in 63" and 67" lengths. Liro doesn't publish capacity or weight.
• Mirolin Demi CF2007 ($1,855.50): 60" x 32" x 22", end drain, 51.5 US gal (195 L), 90 lb, 2-piece. Mirolin says its two-piece design lets you choose a deck-mounted tub filler, or a wall or floor mount. It sits on five self-levelling feet.
• Maax Elina 6634 ($1,893.34): 66" x 33 7/8" x 26 7/8", center drain, 95 US gal, 137 lb. Maax calls it a 2-person bath with a maximized bathing well (61 5/8" x 29 5/8"). One-piece, linear-rounded overflow and drain pre-installed in chrome, F² compatible, 25-year limited warranty.
• Zitta Kuadra Slikcast ($1,886.50): 63 5/16" x 28 11/16" x 21 3/4", rectangular, Slikcast stone, 83 US gal (314 L), 340 lb (154 kg), with the drain included and an integrated overflow. Immersion point 15 3/16". If you want the solid, matte look of stone without Victoria + Albert pricing, this is the tub in our range to look at. Plan for its weight the same way you would for cast iron.
• Neptune Munich F2 3260 AFR ($2,010.75): 58 7/8" x 31 5/8", end drain, 2-piece, AFR. Neptune includes an integrated linear overflow and drain kit in chrome and levelling legs, and its product page lists a 10-year warranty. At 130.07 lb it's easy to move into place.
• Mirolin Brooke CF2002 ($2,028.75): 68" x 36" x 23", 76.9 US gal (291 L), 105 lb, 2-piece. Mirolin describes an oval outside with a narrower oval interior that "envelopes and supports", with a 71° lumbar angle.
• Zitta Harrogate cast iron clawfoot ($2,096.50): 66 3/4" x 30 1/8" x 26 9/16", enamelled cast iron clawfoot, 56 US gal (210 L). At 425 lb (193 kg) empty it needs a floor check and a plan for delivery. Zitta notes that waste and overflow are not included.

$2,500 to $5,000: larger acrylic and Volcanic Limestone

• Neptune Nice F1 3266 AFR ($2,706.75): 66 1/2" x 31 7/8" x 23 1/4", center drain, 1-piece, AFR, 101.41 lb, with an integrated chrome linear overflow and drain included. Deep sump height of 15 1/4".
• Victoria + Albert Vetralla 59 x 29 ($4,163.60): 58 3/4" x 29 1/8" x 22", Volcanic Limestone, center drain, 141 lb (64 kg), 80 US gal (303 L), with an overflow hole. It needs the K-51 drain, sold separately.

$5,000 and up: Victoria + Albert Barcelona and solid surface

• Victoria + Albert Barcelona 60 x 29 ($5,213.60): 59 3/4" x 28 1/2" x 21 1/2", Volcanic Limestone, centered drain, 136 lb (62 kg), 43 US gal (163 L), no overflow hole. Victoria + Albert gives a maximum recommended bathing depth of 20" using a silicone stopper on the K-36E drain, which is required and sold separately (K-36E IntelliDrain ($614.60) in polished chrome). Made to CSA B45.5-17 / IAPMO Z124-2017. The tub and drain together come to $5,828.20.
• Bagno Italia Moderno 72 carbon fiber ($10,800): 72" x 51" x 23", one-piece solid surface carbon fiber with a high-polish finish inside and out. Bagno Italia includes two drains (white and chrome) and a neutral slim overflow, and lists CSA B45.5-17 / IAPMO Z124-2017. It's the widest tub here by far, so measure your room first.

Freestanding tubs by brand

What each brand in our range does well, and where its freestanding tubs fit.

Maax

Maax (part of American Bath Group, like Neptune) has two very different tubs here. The Sax 6032 is a 2-piece AcrylX end drain tub with a coloured skirt option and a limited lifetime warranty. The Elina 6634 is a one-piece, center drain tub for two with the drain pre-installed and a 25-year limited warranty. Both are compatible with Maax's F² drain connector, and the Sax is an AFR model. Maax also makes the Linosa floor-mount filler covered below.

Neptune

Produits Neptune is a Quebec brand. The Munich F2 (2-piece, end drain) and Nice F1 (1-piece, center drain) are both AFR tubs with an integrated linear overflow and drain included and levelling legs. Neptune's installation guide gives useful floor advice, quoted in the floor load section below.

Mirolin

Mirolin, an Ontario brand, publishes a clear spec table for its freestanding tubs, with capacity to the overflow, average weight and lumbar angle. The Demi (60") and Brooke (68") are both 2-piece. The Demi is the lightest tub in this guide at 90 lb.

Zitta

Zitta is a Quebec brand with the widest material range here: the acrylic Celio, the cast iron Harrogate clawfoot and the Slikcast stone Kuadra, both from its Slik Portfolio collection. The Celio spec sheet lists the Zitta freestanding installation kit AB00045 ($178.50) as an accessory.

Liro (Aristo)

Liro Canada sells its freestanding tubs under the Aristo name. Its spec sheets are short: material, installation type, adjustable legs, drain position and size. The Opal 60 is pure acrylic reinforced by fibreglass with a center drain. We stock other Aristo shapes too, but the spec sheets don't list capacity or weight, so ask us if you need those numbers.

Kube Bath

Kube Bath's Ovale 59 and Volta 71 are the smallest and the longest tubs under $1,700 in this guide. Kube's spec sheets list "high molecular pure resin", which Kube says is warm to the touch, easy to clean and repair and has high heat retention, plus a brass pop-up drain and levelling feet. Kube's installation guide says you'll need access from below the floor to check the waste connections for leaks.

Victoria + Albert

Victoria + Albert (House of Rohl in Canada) makes its tubs from Volcanic Limestone. They're the priciest tubs here, but at 136 to 141 lb, the Barcelona and Vetralla weigh about the same as a Maax or Neptune acrylic tub and far less than cast iron or Slikcast stone. Victoria + Albert sells the drain separately: the K-36E IntelliDrain for tubs without an overflow hole and the K-51 for tubs with one.

Bagno Italia

Bagno Italia's Moderno 72 is the solid surface option in our range: a carbon fiber one-piece tub, 72" x 51". It's a statement piece, and the only tub here over $10,000.

Freestanding tub materials compared

A few practical points follow from the numbers:

• Weight drives delivery and floor prep. An acrylic tub can go up a flight of stairs with two people. A 425 lb cast iron tub or a 340 lb stone tub needs more hands or equipment, and a floor check.
• Stone and cast iron aren't the same weight class as Volcanic Limestone. Victoria + Albert's tubs weigh about the same as acrylic.
• Warranty wording differs by material and brand. See the FAQ and each spec sheet.

Sizes: which lengths and widths are available

Most bathrooms take a 60" tub, but our range runs from 58" to 72". The width matters as much as the length in a tight room, and the bathing well (the inside) matters for comfort.

Height matters for getting in and out. The tallest tubs here are the Harrogate (26 9/16"), the Elina (26 7/8") and the Sax (24 7/8"). For layout, clearance and how to measure the room, see the freestanding bathtub buying guide.

Drain position and drains

End drain vs center drain

• End drain: Neptune Munich F2, Maax Sax, Mirolin Demi. One backrest, one drain end. Usually the easier swap if you're replacing an alcove tub, because the drain can stay near the old one.
• Center drain: Maax Elina, Neptune Nice F1, Liro Opal, V+A Barcelona, V+A Vetralla. Backrests at both ends, so you can face either way or share the tub.
• Check the drawing: for the Kube, Mirolin Brooke and Zitta tubs, the spec sheet shows the drain on the drawing without naming the position. Measure from it before the floor is opened.

What's included, and what you buy separately

On the Victoria + Albert Barcelona (no overflow hole), the spec sheet notes that the K-36E IntelliDrain is "equipped with a waste outlet and an overflow outlet" and says it complies with the 2012, 2015 and 2018 International Plumbing Code despite the two outlets being in the same location, as well as the UPC, IRC, NSPC and 2021 IPC. Canadian projects follow the provincial plumbing code, so confirm with your plumber or inspector.

AFR and F²: easier installs on a slab

Maax describes Above-the-Floor Rough (AFR) as leaving "a few inches of clearance between the product's underside and the flooring so pipes can be routed without breaking ground or relocating the drain", and says it suits "installation on a concrete slab in renovation or new construction". The Neptune Munich F2 and Nice F1 and the Maax Sax are AFR models. The Maax Sax and Elina are also compatible with the Maax F² drain connector. If your bathroom is on a slab or you don't want to open the ceiling below, start with these tubs.

Filler options for a freestanding tub

You have three options: deck-mount, floor-mount and wall-mount. Which one works depends on the tub. Our bathtub filler buying guide covers the types, flow rates and rough-in valves in detail, and best tub filler faucet compares styles.

The Maax Linosa is a single-handle floor-mount filler with a hand shower. Maax lists a spout height of 39.625", a spout reach of 8.25", an overall height of 43.25", a 60" hand shower hose, ceramic disc valves, brass construction and all mounting hardware included. It comes in chrome ($673.50) and matte black on our site. A tub plus the Linosa, for example the Maax Sax, comes to $2,133.

Two things to check with any filler: the spout has to clear the tub rim (compare the filler's spout height with the tub height), and the reach has to put the water inside the bathing well, not on the rim.

Floor load: how heavy is a full freestanding tub?

Neptune's installation guide puts it plainly: "An average size bathtub can weigh as much as 450 kg (1000 lbs) when full, the floor must be able to support this weight." It also says the floor must be level and solid, that the tub's feet must be in contact with the floor, and that "the bathtub cannot be suspended by the perimeter alone". Neptune's guide also calls for an opening of about 15 cm x 30 cm (6" x 12") in the floor for the drain.

You can estimate the load for any tub with the brand's own numbers: empty weight + water (1 litre weighs about 1 kg) + the bather. The table uses the listed capacity (usually to the overflow) and a 90 kg (200 lb) bather as an example. These are estimates, not engineering figures.

The estimated totals range from roughly 325 kg to over 550 kg, spread over the tub's footprint. The heaviest are the Slikcast stone Kuadra and the cast iron Harrogate, but a big acrylic tub like the Elina comes close once it's full.

• Ground floor or slab: usually straightforward. AFR tubs help avoid cutting the slab.
• Upper floors: have a contractor or structural engineer check the joists for the tub you've chosen, especially cast iron and stone, and older homes.
• Access below: Kube's installation guide says access from below is needed to check the waste connections for leaks. Plan this before the ceiling below is closed.
• Code and permits: your provincial building code and municipality decide what's required. Neptune says installation should be done by qualified professionals in line with local codes.

1. Measure the room and the path in. Doors, stairs and hallway corners, not just the bathroom.
2. Choose the drain position and mark it from the brand's drawing.
3. Choose the filler type (deck, floor or wall) and check the spout height and reach against the tub.
4. Check the drain: included, optional kit, or required and sold separately.
5. Check the floor using the load estimate above, and get it checked for heavy tubs or upper floors.
6. Plan access below the tub for the waste connection.
7. Check permits with your municipality.

Are freestanding tubs too heavy for my floor?

Neptune's installation guide says an average bathtub can weigh as much as 450 kg (1,000 lb) when full, and that the floor must be able to support that weight. Add the tub's weight, the water (1 litre weighs about 1 kg) and the bather. For example, Zitta's Harrogate cast iron tub is 193 kg empty and holds 210 L, so it is over 400 kg before anyone gets in. Have a contractor or engineer check the floor for heavy tubs and upper floors, especially with cast iron and stone.

What is the difference between center drain and end drain freestanding tubs?

A center drain tub has the drain in the middle and usually a backrest at both ends, so two people can share it or you can face either way. An end drain tub has the drain at one end and one sloped backrest. The drain position also decides where the drain pipe comes up through the floor, so choose it before the plumbing is roughed in, especially if you're replacing an existing tub.

Can I put a deck-mounted faucet on a freestanding tub?

Only on some models. Maax says the Sax accepts a deck- or floor-mount faucet, and Mirolin says its two-piece tubs like the Demi let you choose a deck-mounted tub filler, or a wall or floor mount. Most one-piece freestanding tubs have no deck for a faucet, so they need a floor-mount or wall-mount filler.

What is AFR on a Neptune or Maax bathtub?

AFR stands for Above-the-Floor Rough. Maax describes it as leaving a few inches of clearance between the tub's underside and the floor so pipes can be routed without breaking ground or relocating the drain, which it says suits installation on a concrete slab. The Neptune Munich F2 and Nice F1 and the Maax Sax in this guide are AFR models.

Is acrylic or cast iron better for a freestanding tub?

Do Victoria + Albert tubs include a drain?

No, not the ones in this guide. Victoria + Albert's spec sheets say the Barcelona 60 x 29 without an overflow hole needs the K-36E IntelliDrain, and the Vetralla 59 x 29 with an overflow hole needs the K-51 drain, both required and sold separately.

Do I need a special drain for a freestanding tub?

It depends on the tub. Some include the drain and overflow (for example the Maax Elina and Neptune Nice F1), some include a pop-up drain (Kube Bath), and some need one bought separately (Victoria + Albert, and the Zitta Harrogate says waste and overflow are not included). Zitta also sells an installation kit (AB00045) for its freestanding tubs. Check the included items on the product page.

What warranty do freestanding bathtubs have?

It varies by brand and model, so check each spec sheet. Maax lists a limited lifetime warranty on the Sax and a 25-year limited warranty on the Elina. Neptune's product page for the Munich F2 says 10 years. Zitta lists 20 years on the Celio, varying with finish. Victoria + Albert's sheets say most products carry limited warranties and send Canadian customers to houseofrohl.ca/support for the full terms.
