Short answer: a Moen shower is two orders, a trim you see and a rough-in valve behind the wall, and the trim page tells you which valve. The Moen Align T2191 Posi-Temp trim names the 2500 series, so it goes on a valve such as the Moen 2520. The Align UT2191 M-CORE 2-Series trim looks almost the same but names U130 and U140, so it goes on an M-CORE U130CI or U140CI. Get the letter wrong and the trim will not fit.
Plumbing Market lists 147 Moen shower valve trims and 54 rough-in valves inside the Moen collection as of October 9, 2026. In this guide, a trim is paired with a valve only where the trim's own page names the valve series. Where the page is silent, we say so and stop.
Step 1. Know the four Moen valve families
| Family | How it controls the water | Cartridge comes with | Valves on our site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posi-Temp | Rotate only, temperature | The valve (1222 cartridge) | 2510, 2520, 2580, 2521 |
| M-CORE 2-Series | Rotate only, temperature | The trim (1212 cartridge) | U130CI, U140CI, U130X, U140X |
| M-CORE 3-Series | Lift and rotate, temperature and volume | The trim (1213 cartridge) | Same U130 and U140 valves |
| ExactTemp | Thermostatic temperature, with a separate volume trim and valve | Not stated on our valve pages | S3371 thermostatic, S3600 volume control |
For Posi-Temp and M-CORE, the handle and cartridge columns come from Moen's published comparison of M-CORE, Posi-Temp and Moentrol valves. Moen says those valves are all pressure balanced and built on the M-PACT system, and that their trims are not compatible with the other Moen valves. The ExactTemp row comes from our trim and valve pages. The pressure-balance idea itself is explained in What Is a Pressure Balance Valve in a Shower?.
Step 2. Read the trim page for the valve series
Each trim page below opens with the same line: trim only, requires a compatible Moen rough-in valve, sold separately. Most then name a recommended valve series. Here is the Align collection, which covers every family:
| Trim | What it is | Valve series the page names | Valve to order from our site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Align T2191 | Posi-Temp, valve only | 62300, 2500 | 2510 (1/2 inch IPS), 2520 (1/2 inch CC) or 2580 (crimp PEX inlets) |
| Align T2190 | Posi-Temp with diverter, tub/shower | 2521 | 2521 (1/2 inch CC and IPS) |
| Align UT2191 | M-CORE 2-Series, valve only | U130, U140 | U130CI shower only, U140CI tub and shower |
| Align UT3291 | M-CORE 3-Series, valve only | U130, U140 | Same as UT2191 |
| Align UT4291 | M-CORE 4-Series, tub/shower valve only | U130, U140 | Same as UT2191 |
| Align UT3290 | M-CORE 3-Series with integrated transfer | U232, U362 | U232CIS or U362CIS |
| Align T4292 | Volume control trim | S3600 | S3600 (3/4 inch IPS) |
| Align T4291 | ExactTemp, valve only | Not named on the page | Not paired. Confirm on Moen's sheet. |
The 2500-series valves differ by connection, not by function. The 2510 page lists 1/2 inch IPS, the 2520 lists 1/2 inch CC, and the 2580 lists crimp PEX inlets with CC outlets. All three list the Moen 1222 cartridge. Choose by the pipe in the wall.
The M-CORE valves split by ports. Moen describes the 3-port U130 as two inlets and one outlet for shower-only, and the 4-port U140 as two inlets and two outlets for tub and shower. The suffix gives the connection: CI is CC/IPS and X is crimp ring PEX, as the titles of the U130CI and U130X show.
Step 3. Pick the shower experience, then the trim
Temperature only, simplest
Posi-Temp (T2191) or M-CORE 2-Series (UT2191). Both rotate for temperature only. The T2191 page lists 2.5 gpm (9.5 L/min) and the UT2191 page lists 1.75 gpm (6.6 L/min), each as a maximum at 80 psi. If you are replacing trim on an existing Posi-Temp valve, stay with Posi-Temp trim.
Temperature and volume on one handle
M-CORE 3-Series. The UT3291 names U130 and U140. Moen says the 3-Series handle rotates for temperature and tilts for volume, and that the 1213 cartridge comes with the trim. Moen also notes that M-CORE lets you choose 2-, 3- or 4-Series trim on one rough-in, so a U140 installed now can take a different series of trim later.
Two or more outlets: head, hand shower, body sprays
Moen describes M-CORE transfer valves as pairing with a mixing valve to run two or three showering devices. The Voss UT4611 transfer trim names U231 and U361; Plumbing Market lists the U231CI. The Align UT3290 combines a 3-Series handle and a transfer in one trim and names U232 and U362. Moen calls the 232 and 362 stacking valves.
Thermostatic
ExactTemp keeps a set temperature. The TS3411 page names S3371 and S3600, and the 90 Degree TS3100 names S3371. The S3371 page lists 3/4 inch IPS. Volume is set by a separate trim, such as the Align T4292, on the S3600 valve. The S3600 page also lists 3/4 inch IPS.
Same collection, two valve choices: Voss
The pattern repeats across collections. The Voss T2691 Posi-Temp trim names 62300 and 2500. The Voss UT2691 M-CORE 2-Series names U130 and U140. Pick the valve first and the handle look second. A U140 valve cannot take the T2691, and a 2520 cannot take the UT2691.
Who should build which
| Your project | Trim | Valve |
|---|---|---|
| New shower-only stall, simple control | Align UT2191 | U130CI (CC/IPS) or U130X (crimp PEX) |
| New tub and shower, temperature and volume on one handle | Align UT3291 | U140CI or U140X |
| Replacing trim on an existing Posi-Temp valve | Align T2191 or Voss T2691 | Keep the valve; confirm it is Posi-Temp (rotate-only handle) |
| Tub and shower with a diverter on the Posi-Temp platform | Align T2190 | 2521 |
| Head plus hand shower from one handle | Align UT3290 | U232CIS or U362CIS |
| Thermostatic with separate volume | TS3411 and T4292 | S3371 and S3600 |
Frequently asked questions
Does a Moen shower trim include the valve?
No. Every trim page in this guide says trim only: requires a compatible Moen rough-in valve (sold separately). The valve sits behind the wall; the trim is the handle, plate and any spout or head that comes with it.
Which valve goes with the Align T2191 Posi-Temp trim?
The T2191 page names recommended valve series 62300 and 2500. Plumbing Market lists 2500-series Posi-Temp valves such as the 2510 (1/2 inch IPS), 2520 (1/2 inch CC) and 2580 (crimp ring PEX inlets). Pick by the pipe you are connecting.
Which valve goes with a Moen M-CORE trim?
The M-CORE 2-Series, 3-Series and 4-Series valve-only trims in this guide, including the Align UT2191, UT3291 and UT4291, all name U130 and U140. Moen describes the U130 as a 3-port valve for shower-only and the U140 as a 4-port valve for tub and shower.
Can I put an M-CORE trim on my old Posi-Temp valve?
Moen says no. Its comparison of M-CORE, Posi-Temp and Moentrol valves answers that the trim is not compatible with other Moen valves. Moen also notes that the Posi-Temp cartridge comes with the valve, while the M-CORE cartridge comes with the trim.
What does the U prefix on a Moen trim mean?
Moen says M-CORE 2-Series trim numbers copy the matching Posi-Temp number with a U in front, for example Align T2191 and UT2191. M-CORE 3-Series numbers copy the Moentrol number with a U, for example T3291 and UT3291. Same look, different valve.
Which valve goes with the Align T2190 Posi-Temp with diverter trim?
The T2190 page names the 2521 series. Plumbing Market lists the Moen 2521 rough-in valve, whose page lists 1/2 inch CC and IPS connections and the 1222 cartridge.
Does the Align T4291 ExactTemp trim name a valve?
No. The T4291 page says it needs a compatible Moen rough-in valve, but it does not name a series, so this guide does not pair it. The matching T4292 volume control trim names S3600, and the TS3411 ExactTemp trim names S3371 and S3600.
Honest close
The trim page is the authority here. We paired only where it names a valve series. The Align T4291 ExactTemp trim and a few others do not name one, so they are left unpaired. Some valve pages repeat a generic feature line that does not fit the product. For example, the S3600 volume valve page mentions thermostatic control, so we quoted only its connection. Valve depth, stops and outlets to a tub spout are installation details for Moen's instructions and your plumber. If the shower is already leaking, start with Why Is My Shower Valve Leaking?.
