Fluid Shower Valves and Trim Kits: How to Match Them

Fluid shower systems come in two parts: a pressure-balancing rough-in valve that lives inside the wall, and a trim kit (handle, cover plate, shower head and sometimes a tub spout or hand shower) that you see. Buying the right pair is the most common question we get about Fluid showers. This guide shows which Fluid valve goes with which trim, so you order the right parts the first time.

Valve and trim details come from Fluid's published specification sheets and our product pages. See every Fluid product we list on the Fluid brand page.

The Three Fluid Valves

Fluid has updated its valves. Each current valve replaces an older model number, and trim kits often still name the older number. Here's how they line up, according to Fluid's specifications:

Current valve Replaces What it does Handles
F1021B 1-way F1001B Non-diverting: shower only, or tub/shower with a diverting tub spout Single
F1042B 2-way F1002B Built-in 2-way diverter cartridge (e.g. shower head + tub spout or hand shower) Single
F1023B 3-way F1003B Pressure balancing with a 3-way diverter (e.g. rain head, hand shower, tub spout) Dual

The key rule: if a trim kit says it needs the F1001B, use the F1021B. If it says F1002B, use the F1042B. If it says F1003B, use the F1023B. Fluid states that each new valve is a direct replacement for the one before it.

Features they share

Per Fluid's specification sheets, these valves use forged brass bodies with ceramic pressure-balancing cartridges for scald protection. They have integral stops for servicing, a built-in bubble level, and solder, PEX or PEX-W connection options. The F1021B spec sheet lists CSA B125.1, ASME A112.18.1 and cUPC certifications. That's worth knowing for Canadian code inspections. New to pressure balancing? Read what a pressure balance valve is.

Matching Trim Kits to Valves

Shower-only trims: use the F1021B

Tub and shower with a diverting spout: use the F1021B

Here the diverter is in the tub spout, so the valve doesn't need one.

Single-handle 2-way trims: use the F1042B

Dual-handle 3-way trims: use the F1023B

Some Fluid trims call for other valves, such as the F1012B or F1022B, which we don't currently list. Always check the "requires valve" line on the trim's product page before you order.

Upgrading Without Opening the Wall: Switch Retrofit Kits

Fluid's Switch kits add a slide bar, hand shower and shower head to existing rough-in plumbing. The 8" round Switch rain shower retrofit kit F9316 and the square Switch retrofit kit F9416 have a built-in diverter. According to Fluid, they can work with a diverting tub spout and an F1001B-type non-diverting valve to feed a tub, shower head and hand shower. Valves and valve covers are not included.

Finishes

Most Fluid trims we list come in polished chrome, brushed nickel and matte black. Some series, such as Utopia, are listed in chrome and brushed nickel only. Valves are rough-in bodies, so their finish doesn't matter once they're in the wall. Pick your trim finish to match the bathroom faucets in the same room.

Install Notes

  • Wall depth: the F1042B spec lists an adjustable installation depth from 2-7/8" to 3-11/16". For deeper walls, Fluid's F1021B spec sheet references the F-EXT1021 extension kit.
  • Back-to-back: Fluid notes the F1042B supports back-to-back installation.
  • Temperature limit: the valves include a maximum temperature limit stop. Set it during install.
  • Licensed install: follow local code. Our rough-in valve types guide covers the basics.

Warranty

Fluid's specification sheets list a limited lifetime faucet warranty against material and manufacturing defects for residential use, and a 2-year limited warranty for commercial use.

Planning Your Shower in Five Steps

  1. Decide on outlets. Will you have just a shower head, a head and a tub spout, a head and a hand shower, or all three? This choice decides the valve.
  2. Choose the series. Wisdom has round, soft shapes. Citi and Quad are squarer and more architectural. Utopia sits in between. Match the series to your faucet.
  3. Pick the trim kit. Note the valve it lists on the product page.
  4. Order the matching valve. Use the table above to translate older valve numbers to the current F1021B, F1042B or F1023B.
  5. Choose the connection type. Tell your plumber whether you're running copper (solder), PEX or PEX-W, so the right valve version is installed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ordering a 2-way trim for a 1-way valve. A single-handle trim that diverts between a head and a hand shower needs the diverter cartridge in the F1042B. The F1021B can't do it unless the diverter is in the tub spout or a Switch kit.
  • Mixing brands. Fluid trims are designed for Fluid valves. Trims from another brand won't fit the Fluid cartridge.
  • Setting the valve at the wrong depth. Use the bubble level and the plaster guard (mud guard) supplied with the valve, and check the depth range against your finished wall thickness, including tile.
  • Skipping the temperature limit stop. Setting it at install is the easiest time to protect children and older family members from scalding.

Matching Fluid Bathroom Faucets

Each Fluid shower series has matching lavatory faucets, so the vanity and shower look like a set. For a Wisdom shower, pair it with the Wisdom single-lever faucet F28003 or the Wisdom widespread faucet F28006. Quad showers pair with the Quad single-lever faucet F16001, and Citi showers pair with the Big Citi faucet F24013. Choose the same finish on both, and check each product page for the finishes offered, because photos may show chrome where another finish hasn't been photographed yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which valve do I need for a Fluid shower trim kit?

Check the valve listed on the trim. F1001B trims use the current F1021B, F1002B trims use the F1042B, and F1003B trims use the F1023B. Fluid lists each new valve as a direct replacement.

Is the Fluid F1021B the same as the F1001B?

Fluid describes the F1021B as a direct, fully interchangeable replacement for the F1001B that works with the same trims.

Are Fluid shower valves certified for Canada?

Fluid's F1021B specification sheet lists CSA B125.1, ASME A112.18.1 and cUPC certification.

Do Fluid trim kits include the valve?

No. Fluid trim kits are sold without the rough-in valve, which you buy separately.

What warranty do Fluid shower valves have?

Fluid lists a limited lifetime warranty for residential use and a 2-year limited warranty for commercial use.
