TOTO Drake vs Aquia IV vs UltraMax: Canadian Prices & Which to Buy (2026)

Prices in CAD as of September 26, 2026, from plumbingmarket.ca (Cotton/white unless noted). Prices and stock can change, so the product page always has the current number.

Shopping for a TOTO toilet in Canada usually comes down to three names: the Drake, the Aquia IV and the UltraMax. All three are TOTO's mainstream floor-mounted toilets. All three flush at 1.28 GPF (4.8 LPF), and all three sell in large numbers. But they are built differently. The Drake is a classic two-piece. The Aquia IV is a sleek, fully skirted dual-flush toilet. The UltraMax is a one-piece with the seat included. Those differences change the price, how easy the toilet is to clean, which rough-ins it fits and which WASHLET bidet seat setup works with it.

This guide compares them side by side, with specs taken only from TOTO's own spec sheets and installation manuals (totousa.com), current Canadian prices from our store, and the questions Canadian homeowners and installers actually ask. If you're also adding a bidet seat, see our WASHLET S2 vs S5 vs S7 vs S7A comparison and our WASHLET+ vs WASHLET guide.

Some websites quote MaP figures, but we only publish what TOTO publishes, so none are listed here. All three meet the ASME A112.19.2/CSA B45.1 performance standard listed on TOTO's sheets.

Flush and water surface

TOTO Drake two-piece elongated Universal Height toilet CST776CEFG

All three use a version of TOTO's TORNADO FLUSH, which TOTO describes as using 360° cleaning power to reach every part of the bowl. The Aquia IV uses TOTO's DYNAMAX TORNADO FLUSH version, paired with dual flush. All three list a minimum flowing pressure of 8 psi, which is low. If you are on a well with weak pressure, check it before you buy.

Water surface: the real difference

The spec that most separates these toilets day to day is the water surface, the size of the pool of water in the bowl. A larger water surface keeps the bowl cleaner between flushes. On TOTO's spec sheets:

  • UltraMax (elongated): 9" x 7"
  • Drake (elongated): 9" x 6-7/8"; round Drake 9" x 6-5/8"
  • Aquia IV (two-piece and one-piece): 7" x 5"

This matches what owners say on Reddit and bidet forums. The Aquia's smaller water spot is the most common complaint, and people say they need the brush a little more often than with a Drake. Owners also say the current "N" version of the Aquia IV (model numbers ending in N, like the CST446CEMGN we stock) is better in this respect than earlier versions, but it's still smaller than the Drake. If a large water surface is your top priority, choose the Drake or UltraMax.

Dual flush vs single flush

The Aquia IV's push-button gives you a full flush at 1.28 GPF (4.8 LPF) and a light flush at 0.9 GPF (3.4 LPF). In a busy family bathroom where most flushes are liquid waste, that saves water on every light flush. The Drake and UltraMax flush 1.28 GPF (4.8 LPF) every time, which is already high-efficiency. All three are EPA WaterSense certified in their 1.28 GPF form, according to TOTO. Before you buy, check whether your municipality offers a toilet rebate and whether it requires a specific certification.

Trapway

TOTO lists a 2-1/4" trap diameter for the Aquia IV, 2-1/8" for the Drake and 2" for the UltraMax. All three have a 2-1/8" trap seal. Any of them will handle normal household use. Don't pick one on trap size alone. Water surface, cleaning and fit matter more.

Drake 1.28 vs 1.6 GPF

We stock the Drake in both. TOTO's spec sheets (SS-02049 for 1.28 and SS-02004 for 1.6) show the same TORNADO FLUSH, the same 9" x 6-7/8" water surface and the same 2-1/8" trap. The only listed difference is 4.8 vs 6.0 litres per flush. Many Canadian jurisdictions require 4.8 L or less for new toilets (Ontario's Building Code, for example), so the 1.28 GPF model is the default choice. The Drake 1.6 GPF elongated ($479.99) is there for jobs where it's permitted and specifically wanted.

Shop Drake 1.28 GPF – $419.99 Shop Drake 1.6 GPF – $479.99

One-piece vs two-piece, and cleaning

TOTO Aquia IV two-piece dual flush skirted toilet, Universal Height

A two-piece toilet (Drake, Aquia IV two-piece) ships as a separate tank and bowl, bolted together on site. A one-piece (UltraMax, Aquia IV one-piece) is a single casting.

  • Cleaning: a one-piece has no tank-to-bowl gap to collect dust and grime. The Aquia IV goes further with a completely skirted bowl, where smooth sides hide the trapway, so there are no curves to scrub at the base. The Drake has a traditional exposed trapway.
  • Handling: two-pieces are easier to carry up stairs. TOTO lists shipping weights of 62 lb (bowl) and 32 lb (tank) for the elongated Drake, and 81 lb (bowl) and 29 lb (tank) for the Aquia IV two-piece. The UltraMax ships at 99 lb in one box, and the Aquia IV one-piece at 118 lb. Plan for two people on the one-pieces.
  • Cost: one-pieces usually cost more, but the UltraMax is the exception here. With its seat included, it costs about the same as a Drake with a seat.
  • Looks: the Drake is the classic shape. The Aquia IV is the most modern of the three. The UltraMax has a compact one-piece profile, and the Low Profile version has an even lower tank.

CEFIONTECT: all three are sold with TOTO's CEFIONTECT glaze (the Drake's Ebony #51 version is the exception, per TOTO). TOTO says the glaze minimizes waste sticking to the ceramic. TOTO's care instructions call for mild cleaners, and its warranty excludes damage from chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) cleaners, so skip in-tank bleach tablets.

Aquia IV one-piece vs two-piece

According to TOTO's spec sheets (SS-02079 and SS-02072), the two share the same flush, water surface (7" x 5"), trap (2-1/4") and rough-in options. The one-piece ($1,494) adds Universal Height, an included SS124 SoftClose seat, no tank-to-bowl joint, and a design TOTO says is "specially designed to accommodate a WASHLET+". The two-piece Universal Height ($769.99) costs less and is easier to carry, but you add your own seat.

TOTO UltraMax one-piece elongated toilet with SoftClose seat

UltraMax: the value one-piece

TOTO's spec sheet describes the UltraMax as a one-piece TORNADO FLUSH toilet at 1.28 GPF with Universal Height, a 9" x 7" water surface and an included SS114 SoftClose seat. We stock it as the elongated UltraMax ($733), the round UltraMax ($733, SS113 seat) and the UltraMax Low Profile ($733), which TOTO draws at 25" tall against 28-1/8" for the standard UltraMax. The low tank helps under a window or a low shelf. There is also a 1.6 GPF version and a right-hand lever version for toilets next to a wall on the left.

UltraMax II, Eco UltraMax and Drake II: these are separate TOTO models, and we don't stock them. If you've read reviews of the UltraMax II, remember that it isn't the same toilet as the UltraMax covered here.

Rough-in and installation

The rough-in is the distance from the finished wall (not the baseboard) to the centre of the toilet flange, usually where the two closet bolts sit. Most Canadian homes are 12". Older houses sometimes have 10", and occasionally 14". TOTO's Drake installation manual notes that the rough-in "must be at least 12 inches for most models" and that 10" models end in ".10".

Rough-in Drake Aquia IV UltraMax
12" Yes (standard) Yes (standard) Yes (standard)
10" Drake CST776CEFG.10 ($553.68) TSU48.10 Unifit adapter ($133.20) Not listed on the TOTO spec sheets we checked
14" Not offered TSU48.14 Unifit adapter ($133.20) Not listed

The Aquia IV's Unifit system is a real advantage in older homes. TOTO's sheet lists "12" (10" and 14" options available)", so one Aquia IV can fit all three common rough-ins with the right adapter. At least one Canadian competitor says the Aquia IV is 12" only. TOTO's own spec sheet says otherwise.

What installation involves

TOTO's installation manuals for these models list the same basic tools: a 10" adjustable wrench, carpenter's level, hacksaw, tape measure, pliers, flat screwdriver and putty knife, plus a new wax ring and closet bolts. The steps:

  1. Shut off the water, remove the old toilet, and clean the flange.
  2. Install new closet bolts and a wax ring, and set the bowl (or the complete one-piece) level.
  3. On two-piece models, attach the tank to the bowl with the supplied gasket and bolts.
  4. Connect the supply line to the stop valve, turn the water on and check for leaks, then fit the seat.

For back-to-back installations in vertical waste stacks, TOTO recommends a double combination wye (1/8 bend), not a double sanitary tee or cross. To keep a gap between the tank and wall, TOTO says to set the flange at a nominal 12" rough-in. Handy homeowners often install a Drake themselves. The one-pieces are heavy, so bring a helper. For a new drain location or a flange repair, hire a licensed plumber.

Height and bowl shape

Universal Height is TOTO's comfort height. It sits higher than a traditional toilet, which many adults, tall people and anyone with knee or hip trouble find easier. TOTO's spec sheets show a 16-1/8" bowl rim height for the Universal Height Drake and the UltraMax. TOTO lists a seat height of 17-1/4" for the UltraMax with its seat, and 17-9/16" for the Aquia IV one-piece. For kids' bathrooms or shorter users, the Drake standard height ($375.90) and Aquia IV standard height ($719.99) are the standard-height options. Standard-height models don't have an F in the model number.

Round vs elongated: TOTO's drawings show the elongated Drake at 28-3/8" long and the round Drake at 26-3/8". The UltraMax is the same, at 28-3/8" elongated and 26-3/8" round. The Aquia IV is elongated only (27-9/16" two-piece, 27-5/8" one-piece). Round saves 2" in a tight powder room, while elongated is generally more comfortable and is the only shape that takes the THU857 auto flush kit. The WASHLET S7/S7A seats we sell for WASHLET+ are elongated models too.

WASHLET and WASHLET+ compatibility

All three accept a TOTO WASHLET bidet seat, but the details differ. For choosing the seat itself, see our WASHLET S2 vs S5 vs S7 vs S7A guide. For hidden hookups, see WASHLET+ vs WASHLET.

  • Drake: takes a standard elongated or round WASHLET without extra parts. For hidden hookups, buy a Drake WASHLET+ set. TOTO's Drake WASHLET+ S7A spec sheet lists the T40 bowl C776CEFGT40.
  • Aquia IV two-piece: TOTO's spec sheet lists the 9AU321-A WASHLET adapter ($14.40) as "Required for WASHLET installation". This applies only to the Aquia. Order it with your seat.
  • Aquia IV one-piece: TOTO describes it as "specially designed to accommodate a WASHLET+", and its spec sheet doesn't list the 9AU321-A. If you plan a regular WASHLET on it, call us to confirm the parts.
  • UltraMax: takes a standard WASHLET. The UltraMax CST608CEFGAT40 ($607) is the WASHLET+ ready (T40) version, sold without a seat. Pair it with an AT40 seat for concealed hookups.
  • Auto flush: the THU857 auto flush kit ($195.84) works with WASHLET S7 and S7A seats and fits elongated bowls only, so it won't go on the round Drake or round UltraMax. TOTO lists the THU857 in the Drake and UltraMax WASHLET+ S7/S7A sets, and a THU855 kit for the Aquia IV WASHLET+ S7A.

Warranty: what TOTO's documents say

TOTO's spec sheets for the Drake, Aquia IV and UltraMax all list a One Year Limited Warranty. The warranty text in TOTO's Drake installation manual (0GU216) sets out the terms:

  • What's covered: TOTO vitreous china against defects in materials and workmanship, in normal use when properly installed and serviced, for one year from the date of purchase.
  • Who and where: the original purchaser only (not transferable), for products bought and installed in North, Central and South America, which includes Canada.
  • What TOTO does: repair, replace or make another appropriate adjustment, at TOTO's option, with no charge for parts or labour on the repair. TOTO does not cover the cost of removing or reinstalling the toilet.
  • What's excluded: plastic or rubber moving parts in the tank flushing mechanism, toilet seats, damage from improper installation, sediment or foreign matter in the water, misuse or improper cleaning, normal wear (such as gloss loss or scratching) and natural disasters. TOTO also warns that it isn't liable for damage caused by chloramines or chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) cleaners, and notes that product codes allow a maximum of 80 PSI.
  • Proof of purchase is required. Keep your receipt. TOTO encourages registration at totousa.com, but not registering doesn't reduce your rights.

The terms are the same for all three, so warranty shouldn't decide between them. WASHLET seats carry their own TOTO warranty (see our WASHLET guides).

Our honest recommendation

For most Canadian bathrooms, buy the Drake. The Drake Universal Height ($419.99) gives you TORNADO FLUSH, a large 9" x 6-7/8" water surface and the widest choice of sizes for the lowest price of the three. If you want the seat in the box, the Drake with SS124 seat is $499.99.

Buy the Aquia IV if you value dual flush, a skirted bowl that wipes clean, a modern look, or a 10"/14" rough-in through Unifit. Accept the smaller 7" x 5" water surface, and remember the 9AU321-A adapter if a WASHLET is going on the two-piece. The Aquia IV one-piece is the premium pick of this group.

Buy the UltraMax if you want a one-piece for close to Drake money. At $733 with a SoftClose seat, it's the easiest one-piece to recommend, and the Low Profile version solves the window-over-the-toilet problem.

Planning a bidet seat now or later? Choose an elongated bowl, and consider a WASHLET+ set if you're replacing the toilet anyway. Questions about fit, rough-in or which model suits your bathroom? Call our Vaughan showroom at 289-236-2378 or email sales@plumbingmarket.ca. Orders over $900 ship free, and TOTO WASHLET seats ship free across Canada.

FAQ

Which is better, the TOTO Drake or the Aquia IV?

Neither is better at everything. The Drake is the better value and has the bigger water surface: TOTO's spec sheets list 9" x 6-7/8" for the elongated Drake against 7" x 5" for the Aquia IV. The Aquia IV adds dual flush (1.28 or 0.9 GPF), a fully skirted bowl that is easier to wipe down, and a push-button. At our prices the Universal Height Aquia IV two-piece ($769.99) costs $350 more than the Universal Height Drake ($419.99), both sold without a seat.

What is the difference between the TOTO Drake and the UltraMax?

The Drake is a two-piece toilet (separate tank and bowl) and the UltraMax is a one-piece. Both use TORNADO FLUSH at 1.28 GPF (4.8 LPF), and both have a 12" rough-in and a 9"-wide water surface in TOTO's spec sheets. The UltraMax we stock (MS608114CEFG) comes with TOTO's SS114 SoftClose seat and costs $733. The Drake Universal Height is $419.99 without a seat, or $499.99 with an SS124 SoftClose seat. The Drake also comes in 10" rough-in and 1.6 GPF versions, which the UltraMax sheets we used don't list at 10".

Is the TOTO Aquia IV worth the extra money?

It is if you want dual flush, a skirted bowl that is easy to clean, or a 10" or 14" rough-in through TOTO's Unifit adapters. It isn't if your priority is the largest water surface for the money. That's the Drake or UltraMax.

Does the Aquia IV have a smaller water spot than the Drake?

Yes. TOTO's spec sheets list a 7" x 5" water surface for the Aquia IV (two-piece and one-piece), against 9" x 6-7/8" for the elongated Drake and 9" x 7" for the elongated UltraMax. A smaller water surface is one of the most common owner comments about the Aquia on Reddit and bidet forums. The trade-off is lower water use on the 0.9 GPF flush.

TOTO Aquia IV one-piece vs two-piece: what's the difference?

Both have DYNAMAX TORNADO FLUSH, a 1.28/0.9 GPF dual flush, a 7" x 5" water surface, a 2-1/4" trap and a 12" rough-in, with 10"/14" Unifit options, according to TOTO's spec sheets. The one-piece (MS646124CEMFGN) is Universal Height, includes an SS124 SoftClose seat, is "specially designed to accommodate a WASHLET+" and has no tank-to-bowl joint to clean. It's also heavier (118 lb shipping weight) and costs $1,494, against $769.99 for the Universal Height two-piece without a seat.

TOTO Drake 1.28 vs 1.6 GPF: which should I buy?

For most Canadian homes, the 1.28 GPF (4.8 LPF) model. TOTO's spec sheets show the same TORNADO FLUSH, 2-1/8" trap and 12" rough-in for both, and the 1.28 model is EPA WaterSense certified. Many Canadian jurisdictions limit new toilets to 4.8 L per flush (Ontario's Building Code does, for example), so check your local code before choosing 1.6 GPF. The 1.6 GPF version (6.0 LPF) is mostly bought for older drain lines or where it is still allowed.

Does the TOTO Drake come in a 10-inch rough-in?

Yes. TOTO makes Drake models ending in ".10" for a 10" rough-in (spec sheet SS-02051 lists a 10" rough-in for CST776CEFG.10). We stock the 1.28 GPF elongated Universal Height version at $553.68. For the Aquia IV, TOTO lists the TSU48.10 (10") and TSU48.14 (14") Unifit adapters. The UltraMax spec sheets we checked list a 12" rough-in only.

Do I need an adapter to put a WASHLET on an Aquia IV?

On the Aquia IV two-piece, yes. TOTO's spec sheet lists the 9AU321-A WASHLET adapter as "Required for WASHLET installation". It's $14.40. The Drake and UltraMax don't need it. TOTO describes the Aquia IV one-piece as specially designed to accommodate a WASHLET+, and its spec sheet doesn't list the adapter. If you're putting a regular WASHLET on the one-piece, call us to confirm which parts you need.

Can I get auto flush on a Drake, Aquia IV or UltraMax?

Auto flush works only with a WASHLET S7 or S7A seat and TOTO's auto flush kit. The $195.84 THU857 kit fits elongated bowls only, so it is not an option on the round Drake or round UltraMax. TOTO lists THU857 inside the Drake and UltraMax WASHLET+ S7/S7A sets, and a THU855 kit for the Aquia IV WASHLET+ S7A set.

Is the TOTO Drake comfort height?

TOTO calls its comfort height "Universal Height". The Drake comes in both: Universal Height models have an F in the model number (CST776CEFG) and standard-height models don't (CST776CEG). TOTO's spec sheet for the Universal Height Drake shows a 16-1/8" bowl rim height, before you add a seat.

What is the difference between the UltraMax and the UltraMax II?

The UltraMax II is a newer, separate TOTO model. We don't stock it (or the Eco UltraMax), so this guide covers the original UltraMax, which TOTO's spec sheet describes as a one-piece TORNADO FLUSH toilet with a 1.28 GPF flush, Universal Height, a 9" x 7" water surface and an included SS114 SoftClose seat.

What warranty do TOTO toilets have in Canada?

The spec sheets for the Drake, Aquia IV and UltraMax all list a One Year Limited Warranty. TOTO's warranty text (in the Drake installation manual) covers vitreous china against defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase, for the original purchaser, on products bought and installed in North, Central and South America.
