Short answer: yes, a smart toilet is worth it for most Canadian homes, as long as you buy the right kind. If you like your current toilet, a TOTO WASHLET S5 bidet seat ($955) adds warm-water washing, a heated seat, a warm-air dryer and a deodorizer without changing the toilet. If you are replacing the toilet anyway, a WASHLET+ set like the Drake WASHLET+ S5 ($1,448) gives you a new TOTO toilet and the same S5 seat, with the water hose and power cord hidden. The toilet itself does not change: TOTO rates the Drake at 1.28 gallons (4.8 litres) per flush either way.
This guide puts four TOTO toilets side by side: the Drake, UltraMax, Aquia IV and Glaston. For each one we show the price with a SoftClose seat, without a seat, and as a WASHLET+ S5 set. We also cover the questions people ask before they buy: power, outlets, fit, reliability and what happens in a power outage.
Quick picks

- One-piece look: UltraMax WASHLET+ S5 ($1,561).

What "smart toilet" means with TOTO
When most people search for a smart toilet, they want three things: a warm-water wash instead of (or as well as) paper, a heated seat, and a bowl that stays cleaner. With TOTO there are two practical ways to get there:
- A WASHLET bidet seat on a toilet you already have. TOTO says a bidet seat replaces your standard toilet seat and needs no extra plumbing. The electric models plug into a nearby GFCI outlet. TOTO also calls installation a straightforward DIY job that takes less than an hour.
- A WASHLET+ set: a new TOTO toilet sold with a matching WASHLET seat. In TOTO's words, if you have decided to replace your toilet, it suggests WASHLET+, where "no supply connections – water or electrical – will show". TOTO adds that this makes cleaning easier because there are fewer places for dust and debris to collect.
Either way, the seat holds the electronics and the toilet underneath is a normal gravity-flush TOTO toilet. That matters for cost, repairs and power outages, which we cover below. For the full feature-by-feature difference, see our WASHLET+ vs WASHLET guide.
Canadian prices: four TOTO toilets, three ways to buy
Elongated bowl, Universal Height, white/Cotton. "With seat" means a TOTO SoftClose seat is in the box (SS124 on the Drake, Aquia IV and Glaston; SS114 on the UltraMax). "Less seat" means you add a seat or a WASHLET.
| Toilet | Flush | With SoftClose seat | Less seat | WASHLET+ S5 set |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drake (two-piece) | 1.28 GPF | $499.99 | $419.99 | $1,448 |
| UltraMax (one-piece) | 1.28 GPF | $733 | $607 | $1,561 |
| Aquia IV (two-piece, skirted) | 1.28 / 0.9 GPF dual | $888.88 | $769.99 | $1,959 |
| Glaston (two-piece, skirted) | 1.28 GPF | $799.99 | $689.99 | $1,647 |

WASHLET+ set or toilet plus a separate seat?
If you buy the less-seat toilet and a standard WASHLET S5 separately, here is how the totals compare with the matching WASHLET+ S5 set:
| Toilet | Less-seat toilet + WASHLET S5 | WASHLET+ S5 set |
|---|---|---|
| Drake | $419.99 + $955 = $1,374.99 | $1,448 |
| UltraMax | $607 + $955 = $1,562 | $1,561 |
| Aquia IV | $769.99 + $955 = $1,724.99 | $1,959 |
| Glaston | $689.99 + $955 = $1,644.99 | $1,647 |
For the Drake, UltraMax and Glaston the totals are close, so the choice comes down to looks and flexibility. The WASHLET+ set hides the hose and cord. Buying separately lets you pick any WASHLET (S2, S5, S7 or S7A) and move the seat to another toilet later, but the hose and cord stay visible at the side. On the Aquia IV the separate route costs less, so it makes sense if a visible hose does not bother you.
Which TOTO toilet should sit under the seat?
All four use TOTO's TORNADO FLUSH system and CEFIONTECT ceramic glaze, which TOTO says helps stop debris from sticking to the bowl. The differences are shape, cleaning and flush options. Full specs are in our Drake vs Aquia IV vs UltraMax comparison.
- Drake: classic two-piece with a trip lever and, per TOTO's spec sheet, a large 9" x 6-7/8" water surface. It has the lowest entry price (less seat ($419.99), with seat ($499.99)) and the most size options, including a 10" rough-in model.
- UltraMax: a one-piece with the SoftClose seat included (with seat ($733)). TOTO lists a 9" x 7" water surface. The less-seat version is a WASHLET+ ready model (less seat ($607)).
- Aquia IV: dual flush at 1.28 or 0.9 GPF (4.8 or 3.4 LPF) with a chrome push-button and a completely skirted bowl, according to TOTO. TOTO lists optional 10" and 14" rough-ins (with seat ($888.88), less seat ($769.99)).
- Glaston: TOTO describes it as a fully skirted two-piece, "specially designed to accommodate WASHLET+", with a 1.28 GPF TORNADO FLUSH and a 12" rough-in (with seat ($799.99), less seat ($689.99)).
Which WASHLET seat?
TOTO describes the WASHLET S5 as sharing the core features of its higher-end seats: continuous warm water, EWATER+ wand cleaning, PREMIST bowl misting, a warm-air dryer, a deodorizer and a night light, plus a remote that remembers settings for four people. That is why it is our default pick. Need the details? Read our WASHLET S2 vs S5 vs S7 vs S7A comparison.
| Seat | Price (elongated) | Pick it if… |
|---|---|---|
| WASHLET S2 | $590 | You want the same warm-water wash on a tighter budget and are fine with a side control panel instead of a remote. |
| WASHLET S5 | $955 | You want a remote with four user presets. The right seat for most homes. |
| WASHLET S7 | $1,791 | You want EWATER+ cleaning of the bowl as well as the wand, a five-setting dryer and a slimmer profile. |
| WASHLET S7A | $1,966 | You want everything in the S7 plus a touchless auto open/close lid. |

Smart toilet vs regular toilet: what actually changes
- Flushing: nothing changes. The Drake, UltraMax, Aquia IV and Glaston flush the same way with or without a WASHLET.
- Cleaning: PREMIST mists the bowl before each use and EWATER+ cleans the wand after each use, according to TOTO. On the S7 and S7A, EWATER+ also treats the bowl.
- Comfort: heated seat, warm water with adjustable temperature and pressure, and a warm-air dryer.
- Electricity: the seat needs a grounded outlet. The toilet does not.
- Power outage: these are gravity-flush toilets with a lever or push-button, so they still flush. Only the seat functions (wash, heat, dryer) stop until the power comes back.
Before you buy: a five-point fit check
- Outlet: TOTO's WASHLET installation guide calls for a grounded (3-prong) outlet on a GFCI (30 mA or less), 120 V AC, 60 Hz, with rated power of 15 A or more. The power cord is 3.93 ft (1.2 m), so the outlet needs to be close to the toilet.
- Water pressure: TOTO lists a supply pressure range of 7.25 psi (dynamic) to 108.78 psi (static) for the seat.
- Bowl shape: elongated seats fit elongated bowls and round seats fit round bowls. TOTO suggests measuring from the bolt holes to the front of the bowl. Our WASHLET compatibility guide lists which TOTO toilets work.
- Rough-in (new toilet only): all four toilets here are 12" rough-in. For an older home with a 10" rough-in, look at the Drake 10" model. TOTO lists optional 10" and 14" rough-ins for the Aquia IV and Glaston.
- Installation: a WASHLET seat is a DIY job by TOTO's description. Replacing the toilet itself is a bigger job, so many homeowners hire a plumber for that part. Step by step: how to install a TOTO WASHLET.
Are smart toilets reliable? Warranty in plain terms
Reliability is mostly about the seat, because that is where the electronics are. TOTO gives the WASHLET S2 and S5 a one-year limited warranty and the S7 and S7A a two-year limited residential warranty. TOTO's spec sheets list a one-year limited warranty for the Drake, Aquia IV and UltraMax toilets. Because the seat and toilet are separate parts, a seat problem does not mean replacing the toilet. Read the current warranty terms on TOTO's site before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Are smart toilets worth it in Canada?
For most homes, yes, if you match the purchase to the project. Keeping your toilet? A TOTO WASHLET S5 seat ($955) adds warm-water washing, a heated seat and a dryer. Replacing the toilet? A WASHLET+ set such as the Drake WASHLET+ S5 ($1,448) adds a new TOTO toilet with the hose and cord hidden.
Does a smart toilet need electricity?
The WASHLET seat does. TOTO calls for a grounded (3-prong) outlet on a GFCI, 120 V AC, 60 Hz, 15 A or more, within reach of the 3.93 ft (1.2 m) cord. The Drake, UltraMax, Aquia IV and Glaston toilets themselves do not need power to flush.
What happens to a TOTO WASHLET in a power outage?
The toilet still flushes with its lever or push-button because it is a gravity-flush toilet. The seat functions (warm water, heated seat, dryer) stop until the power comes back.
Are smart toilets reliable?
The electronics sit in the seat, so a seat issue does not mean replacing the toilet. TOTO gives the WASHLET S2 and S5 a one-year limited warranty and the S7 and S7A a two-year limited residential warranty.
Bidet seat or bidet toilet: which is better?
A WASHLET seat is the simplest upgrade if your toilet is in good shape. TOTO suggests a WASHLET+ set if you are replacing the toilet anyway, because no water or electrical connections show and there are fewer places for dust to collect.
Will a TOTO WASHLET fit my toilet?
Most WASHLET seats are made for standard elongated or round bowls. Match the seat shape to your bowl and measure from the bolt holes to the front of the bowl, as TOTO suggests. You also need a grounded GFCI outlet within cord reach.
Do I need a plumber to install a WASHLET?
TOTO describes WASHLET installation as a straightforward DIY project that takes less than an hour: remove the old seat, attach the new one, connect the water supply and plug it in. Replacing the toilet itself is a bigger job.
What is the lowest-cost way to get a TOTO smart toilet setup?
A WASHLET S2 ($590) on a toilet you already own. For a new toilet, the Drake less seat ($419.99) plus a WASHLET S2 comes to $1,009.99.
The honest bottom line
A smart toilet is not for everyone. If you never want an outlet beside the toilet, or you are happy with paper, a regular TOTO toilet with a SoftClose seat is a fine choice, and you can add a WASHLET later. For everyone else, the best value is usually a WASHLET S5 on a good toilet. If you are replacing the toilet anyway, a WASHLET+ S5 set on the Drake, UltraMax or Glaston costs about the same as buying the parts separately and looks cleaner. Questions about fit?
